Old Members Day 22nd June 2024

JESUS COLLEGE OLD MEMBERS’ DAY

Saturday 22nd June 2024

Old Members’ Day is in its usual slot in June, and we are looking forward to seeing many of you on the day.

We have three elements to the day.  At the outset we are really pleased to have the Principal with Ge Wang (a DPhil student) talking to us about their recently published paper (with others) concerning the ethical principles in the development of AI for children.

The second half of the morning is a nod to the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka.  Vice Principal Professor Katrin Kohl who is a co-curator of the Kafka Exhibition (Kafka Making of an Icon) at the Bodleian and Professor Leah Tomkins who is about to launch her new book (Franz Kafka and the Truths of Leadership) will introduce very different takes on Kafka. For both parts of the morning there will be plenty of time for questions

We will have lunch in Hall and as usual it will give an opportunity to chat and catch up with old friends.

In the afternoon there will be the chance to go to the free Kafka Exhibition in the Weston Library at the Bodleian.

The programme is open to all old members and their guests and is organised by Jesus College Old Members’ Group (XL Network) and is timetabled as follows:

10.15   Coffee and tea in Ship Street

10.45   Ethics of the Development of AI for children with the Principal and Ge Wan

11.30   Reflections on Kafka with Prof. Katrin Kohl and Prof. Leah Tomkins

12.35   Pre-lunch drink in the Bastion Ship Street

            13.00   Lunch in Hall

Cost per person is:      £30.00 for coffee, talks, pre-lunch drink, & lunch

At lunchtime guests can buy their own wine at the table.

Please book here as soon as possible (Click for the attached form).

Closing date Tuesday 11th June.

We look forward to seeing you on 22nd June for what should be an enjoyable day.

Local Social at the Hospital of St Cross, Winchester

Jesus College Alumin Department is pleased to invite you to their summer ‘Local Social’, for alumni local to Oxford and surrounding counties.

We will be visiting the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty in Winchester on Thursday 6 June 2024. Described by Simon Jenkins as ‘England’s most perfect Almshouse’ and one of the oldest in the country.

The Hospital was founded to support thirteen poor men, so frail they were unable to work, and feed one hundred men at the gates every day. The thirteen became the Brothers of St Cross. Then, as now, they are not monks and St Cross is not a monastery but a secular foundation. In the fifteenth century, Cardinal Beaufort created the Order of Noble Poverty adding the Almshouse to the existing Hospital buildings and giving St Cross the look it has today.

We will be given a tour of this spectacular and historically fascinating site by Brother John, one of today’s Brothers who resides on site. Our thanks to alumna and Winchester resident, Sue Woodward (1976) for facilitating this trip.

Schedule for the day:

10.15am – meet for a tour of the Hospital and Almshouse leaving promptly at 10.30am.

11.45am – Tea and cakes in the Hundred Men’s Hall.

12.30pm – 1.15pm – Lunchtime concert at the Hospital of St Cross. Megan Humphries, Harpist. (optional and free to attend but donations welcome)

Afternoon – free time to enjoy exploring the gardens and water meadows.

2.30pm/3pm – walk to Winchester Cathedral (30mins via water meadows) optional, tickets purchased on arrival.

If you would like to attend the next ‘Local Social’ please email georgina.plunkett@jesus.ox.ac.uk before 27 May 2024. Please state the number of tickets you would like for St Cross. (£7.50 adults, £5 senior citizens & students, £4 under 13 yr olds).

Thank you to all those who made previous ‘Local Socials’ such a success. I hope you will be joining us again for our summer meet-up!

Jesus Curry Recusants (JCR) – 16th April 2024 Update

5.30pm El Vino, Fleet Street

7.00pm Indian City, 4 New Bridge St, Blackfriars, EC4V 6AA

XL Network visit to “Shakespeare and War” 20th February 2024

Jesus Old Members’ Group Visit to National Army Museum for ‘Shakespeare and War’ Exhibition20th February 2024

We are planning a JOMG trip on 20th February 2024 to the ‘Shakespeare and War’ exhibition currently open at the National Army Museum in London (Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HT). The exhibition explores some of the ways Shakespeare shaped how we think about soldiers, the Army and how we imagine war and its consequences. This is the link to the museum’s exhibition page  https://www.nam.ac.uk/whats-on/shakespeare-and-war

The exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Amy Lidster, a fellow of Jesus College.  In the afternoon she will speak to the group about her research, the background to the exhibition and the curating of the display at the museum.  We hope a couple of current Jesus students (who are hoping to make a career in acting) will come and illustrate the talk with excerpts from the plays.

Glyn Prysor, an alumnus of Jesus College, is the Research Director of the Museum, and he will introduce the museum.   Both speakers will be very happy to take questions from the floor.

There will be the chance to go around the exhibition in the morning or if preferred members could do that after the talks. A detailed look at the exhibition takes 45-50 minutes. There will be a chance to have lunch together either in the museum café or nearby.  Those not in a hurry might be willing to repair to a pub afterwards!

The cost of the day is £28.00 per person, and the outline programme is as follows:

11.00 am        Arrive at the museum and view the exhibition (entry is free).
12.30 pm       Lunch.
1.45 pm          Assemble in the Foyle 1 conference room for the talks.
1.50 pm          Glyn Prysor will welcome us and talk briefly about the museum followed by questions.
2.15 pm          Dr Amy Lidster on ‘Shakespeare and War’ followed by questions and comments.
3.30 pm          Finish (or view Exhibition, which closes at 5.30 pm)

I think this should be a really good event and I look forward to many of you joining us on this visit.  The booking form is here

JOMG XL Network Visit to Rochester and Chatham

From John Jones

I invite XL members and their guests to join me in Rochester and Chatham in October. This is an area of significant historical interest and offers many interesting places to visit. I have put together an itinerary for Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th October but, if there is sufficient interest to extend the visit by another day, we would be able to get together for further activities in the locality. Should you wish, it is also possible for you to attend on just one of the days.

On Tuesday 3rd October we will focus on Rochester and the activities will comprise:

  • Starting at 11.00, there will be a guided tour of the Cathedral; we will meet in the Crypt Café to start the tour.
  • Some time will be allowed for a light lunch, or a picnic if the weather is fine.
  • At 15.00 we will get together for a guided walk of the town, taking about 90 minutes.
  • Those who do not want to do the walk might like to take a visit to Rochester Castle; the Castle Keep is an English Heritage property giving fine views of the town and surrounding area.
  • In the evening we will have dinner at the Don Vicenzo Italian Restaurant.

On Wednesday 4th October we will move on to Chatham and:

  • At 09.30, we will gather in the Fort Amherst car park where we will have a guide taking us around the site; note that there are parking charges at the car park.
  • At around 11.00, we will move on to visit the Royal Naval Dockyard; during our time there, we will be able to use their excellent catering facilities; parking is free for Dockyard visitors.

There are further places of interest in the area which you might like to visit whilst you are here. If you are interested in doing more, please tick the box on the booking form. Should there be a sufficient number of attendees wanting to extend the visit, I would be willing to organise an evening meal on Wednesday evening and could arrange for a visit to the Royal Engineers Museum on the Thursday.

You will need to arrange your own accommodation if you are with us for more than one day. There is a Travelodge in the middle of Rochester and a Premier Inn a few miles from the centre, plus a number of smallish hotels in Rochester and Chatham.

There is an excellent train service from London; if you are coming by car and not staying at a hotel with parking, the station multi-storey car park is the best option.

If you have any questions on the trip, please contact Paul Seward at secretary@jomg.org who is liaising with me for this event. If you wish to join us, please fill in the booking form and send it to events@jomg.org.

A booking form Rochester Booking Form for members  is attached which allows you to determine which activities you wish to participate in. Please let us have this no later than the 15th September 2023.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Jesus (not so) Curry Recusants (JCR) Next Meeting 11th July

The JCR next meeting 11th July 2023

Hi Everyone

JCR Gathering 11th July at El Vino in Fleet Street from 5.30pm and in Brasserie Blanc at 7pm

We assemble from 5.30pm in El Vino in Fleet Street for a few drinks before repairing to the nearby Brasserie Blanc at 7pm for a meal.  As usual we will share the costs.  We usually say have just two courses at the Brasserie Blanc but if you do want more, please chip in the difference when it comes to paying. You can pay by cash on the evening or by bank transfer later, which is what most seem to prefer.  I will email everyone the following day with the costs.

Chris Hicks will be in charge on the evening but I will deal with the arrangements up until that point.  I was successful in the Wimbledon ballot and so will my first JCR ever.  I do hope however to make a late drink at the restaurant – maybe!!!

Please let me know if you are attending, if you have not done so already, as it makes the restaurant booking easier.

Many thanks

Peter May
