London trading? Who started it? Where did all those fights and games take place? And why should my horse be very careful if it encounters a lobster?
Come and join Jesus Old Members (JOM) on another fascinating two-hour walking tour of the world-famous City where our official City of London guide, historian and author, Jesus alumna Anne Fletcher, will explain all.
After the Roman invasion of Britannia, a new trading town was born called Londinium, also known as “Roman London”.
We’ll go on a journey through ancient history to see the Roman wall (which pops up in the most unexpected places) and find out what life was like for citizens of Londinium as we walk in their footsteps where the forum and basilica once stood.
En route we’ll hear about a forgotten river, essential to life in Londinium, and discover the strange Temple of Mithras where men worshipped in secret: no women allowed!
Our walk will end at the place where Londinium’s citizens thronged to watch gladiators and spectacles in a vast amphitheatre.
