Jesus (not so) Curry Recusants (JCR) Next Meeting 11th July

The JCR next meeting 11th July 2023

Hi Everyone

JCR Gathering 11th July at El Vino in Fleet Street from 5.30pm and in Brasserie Blanc at 7pm

We assemble from 5.30pm in El Vino in Fleet Street for a few drinks before repairing to the nearby Brasserie Blanc at 7pm for a meal.  As usual we will share the costs.  We usually say have just two courses at the Brasserie Blanc but if you do want more, please chip in the difference when it comes to paying. You can pay by cash on the evening or by bank transfer later, which is what most seem to prefer.  I will email everyone the following day with the costs.

Chris Hicks will be in charge on the evening but I will deal with the arrangements up until that point.  I was successful in the Wimbledon ballot and so will my first JCR ever.  I do hope however to make a late drink at the restaurant – maybe!!!

Please let me know if you are attending, if you have not done so already, as it makes the restaurant booking easier.

Many thanks

Peter May

JOMG Trip to Chichester: 7th September 2022

The trip is planned for Wednesday 7th September. In the morning we will have a guided tour of the Cathedral for about an hour and a quarter.

We will have lunch nearby at Brasserie Blanc. We will all be eating in the same area of the restaurant. As we have done recently, I suggest people organise and pay for their meal table by table.

In the afternoon there is a choice of activity. Either a tour of a nearby vineyard or a city walking tour.

The wine tour will be at the nearby Tinwood Vineyard (4 miles from Chichester and famous for its sparkling wines). From their own publicity ‘The Vineyard Tour & Wine Tasting takes 1.5 hours. This includes three glasses of sparkling wine and a tour around the estate. After the tour you are welcome to stay for an extra glass or a cold bottle of wine of your choice.

The walking tour by green badge guides, from their own publicity, indicates ‘an easy walk within the city walls which takes you through the ages, from Roman Baths to 21st century architecture via medieval streets, the market cross, Georgian residences, the Cathedral Quadrant and Pallant House gallery as well, as some Norman and Victorian architectural examples. It lasts around 1.5 hours.

The timetable for the day is as follows:

11.00 Meet at the East Door of the Cathedral

11.15 Guided tour of the Cathedral

12.45 Lunch at Brasserie Blanc

14.30 The walking tour group will be collected from the restaurant.

15.00 Vineyard Tour (we will leave the restaurant at 2.30pm)

16.30 End of the organised part of the day.

Costs including additional items (tips etc) are:

Cathedral Guided Tour £7.00
City Walking tour £11.00
Vineyard £23.00

All old members are welcome along with any guests they care to invite.

For those coming by car the best place to park for the day is the Cattle Market Car Park (PO19 1JW) which is the cheapest and closest to the centre.

Closing date: Tuesday 30th, August 2022

OLD MEMBERS’ DAY – SATURDAY 25th JUNE 2022

We are pleased to say that Old Members’ Day is back to its usual time in June. This year we will be entirely College based. The Principal will open the day and bring us up to date with College affairs. We will then have two very different presentations.
The first speaker will be Dr Simon Townley. He currently leads a team of researchers working
towards completion of ‘The Victorian County History of Oxfordshire’. There have been several volumes of this meticulously researched work of which Dr Townley has edited six and contributed to eight. He will talk about the origins and the development of the Victorian County
History with particular reference to the Oxfordshire County volumes.
Our second speaker is Professor Paul Riley, the Professorial Fellow in Medicine at Jesus. Many of you may have heard his recent excellent presentation in the Jesus Futures series on ‘The Future of Regenerative Medicine’. His presentation will be around that theme and the genuinely ins-piring work being done.
As always there will be the chance to ask questions of our speakers.
Lunch is an important part of the day when we have a chance to catch up with friends old and new. Drinks will be served before lunch, and we hope both our speakers will be able to join us then and over lunch.
After lunch we will have a guided tour of the splendid new buildings in fourth quad.
The programme for the day, which is open to all old members and their guests, is organised
by the Jesus College Old Members’ Group (XL Network) and is as follows:
10.15 Arrival and coffee in Ship Street Centre
10.40 Principal – welcome and update on College matters
11.00 Dr Simon Townley from the Victorian County History Oxon Trust
11.50 Professor Paul Riley (Professorial Fellow in Medicine)
     12.35 Pre-lunch drinks

Foundling Hospital – 13th November 2019

Foundling Hospital, Brunswick Sq. 2.30pm on Wednesday 13 November.

We have arranged a double headed visit to the Foundling Museum in Brunswick Square, five minutes walk from Russell Sq. underground. The Museum derives from the Foundling Hospital, founded in 1739, which cared for babies at risk of abandonment.

Foundling Hospital Court Room interior

The Museum founded by Thomas Coram has a great history and a most interesting collection  including paintings by its early supporters including Hogarth, Gainsborough and Reynolds. We  shall learn about the development of social attitudes to women since its founding. Alongside  this, we shall see the special music exhibition based on Handel’s legacy to the Museum includ-ing the original of The Messiah.

The plan is to be in two groups with the Museum’s head guide for the art and artefacts while  others start with the music exhibition. With luck we shall gain an insight into both historic and  current links to our College.

The Museum closes at 5.00pm so that we can move to The Lamb in Lamb’s Conduit St. and then on to dinner at CiaoBella a couple of doors away at 6.15pm.

Sunday at the Foundling Hospital (c1872)

The cost for the Museum is £25 per person, ( or £15 for Art Fund members).

The Museum has a Coram Cafe next door for those wishing to eat beforehand.
